Qatar residents driving to or near the airport on C Ring Road yesterday found themselves stuck in a huge traffic jam for up to several hours, as a “freak” accident knocked out Toyota signal.
UPDATE | 12:50pm
Residents are reporting that the signal was working properly again this morning.
The light appears to have gone down on Friday afternoon, and police were on scene to manually direct the flow of traffic. In a tweet yesterday evening, the Ministry of Interior said:
Traffic has been closed on some directions at Toyota signal due to a traffic accident that led to breakdown of one of the signals.#MoI_Qatar— Ministry of Interior (@MOI_QatarEn)
According to the Peninsula, the accident occurred when a young driver who was speeding toward Toyota signal from VIP Roundabout lost control of his vehicle:
As he curved left from the signal towards the road leading to the airport, his vehicle was flung away…
The vehicle slammed into a nearby Al Mana Exchange, but not before knocking down the traffic light pole that guides motorists towards the airport road.
The man was taken to the hospital with injuries, the report added.
A Kahramaa official told the newspaper that he did not know when the light pole would be fixed. “The box is fully gone,” he said.
On Twitter, residents complained about being stuck in traffic during the evening hours. Some, after making it through the congestion caused by construction on the Corniche, were doubly frustrated.
