Official: Qatar to build first World Cup stadium by 2015

Qatar plans to have its first World Cup 2022 stadium up and running in four years, an official has said.

Hassan Al Thawadi, 2022 Supreme Committee Secretary General, said Qatar aims to assign a project manager to the stadium by the end of 2011 and to complete the construction of the stadium with cooling system technology by 2015.

To prepare the country for the World Cup, Qatar also hopes to host a few other sporting events before 2022, Al Thawadi said.

“Our intention is to host a major football tournament by 2020 as a first dress rehearsal,” he said. “We can then host the Confederation’s Cup in 2021 so by 2022 we would be ready the big one.”
