Qatar handball team defeats Poland, advances to the finals

-

For the first time in its history, Qatar’s national team has taken the semi-finals and will compete in the finals on Sunday during the 24th Men’s Handball World Championship.

Qatar beat Poland 29-31, in front of a packed crowd at Lusail Multipurpose Hall.

Congratulations are already pouring in for the team, including from the nation’s top leaders:

According to spectators, organizers ensured that paid ticket-holders made it to their seats tonight, after hundreds complained about being turned away from the semi-finals on Wednesday.

Qatar will face off against France in two day’s time.

Following Sunday’s finals, star performers Kylie Minogue and Taio Cruz will close out the tournament with a concert at the Lusail Hall.

Tickets to the finals can be bought online here and range in price from QR75 to QR500 a seat.

Who’s going? Thoughts?

2.5 million people live in Qatar, most of whom are not Qatari but are thrilled that the home team is through to the finals. Not through money, through determination in this nation to be the best. It’s not buying , it’s investment. You can’t see that through your racist bigoted spectacles.

They won’t. They already started to pull the same trick for footbal WM. They organize “young talent academies”, where they pool heaps of young players from all over the world (mostly, South America, but also even from Europe) and filter the best ones. Current rule (just slightly less ridiculous than in handball) says that player has to be in the country for 5 years. So, sheikhs still have until 2017 to poach foreign players 🙂 and get the best out of them, China olympic camp-style. 2022 football WM will be EXACTLY as the current one.

Prior, Trott, Balance, Pietersen, Morgan, Kieswetter, Stokes, Pietersen etc – all current ‘England’ cricket Internationals? Check out where they were born. Qatar Handball has complied with the rules and has simply done what other countries and other sports have been doing for years – however, apparently more successfully! Good luck to Qatar in the final.

No, Americans are Americans because they lived there for a number of years, took a test, earned the right, and will be American and proud of it for the rest of their life. Is this the same in Qatar? If it is then I have no complaints with the team and congratulations.

Saleem

Who makes the rules? What is a “number of years”? Is someone “less” American if they die one day before the date they become eligible for applying for citizenship? Are my cousins who can’t even speak proper English but carry American passports because they were born there, more “American” than someone who is in the process of attaining citizenship after having lived there for a significant number of years? Who determines the rigidity of the tests? Are immigrants to Canada for instance less “Canadian” if their tests are not as tough as the ones for “new” Americans?

In a sentence what I am telling you is these rules are all made by men, not by nature.

Yes, just as American laws would consider Hillary Clinton to be as American as the people who were indigenous to the Americas, and consider her to be as American as my two cousins, both of whom have not been back to America since the eighties, and both most likely are unaware of what the “Star-spangled banner” is, let alone know the lyrics to it.

You clowns call Qataris racist if they talk about “pure” Qataris or not, then you turn around and do the same thing when it comes to things like this. Who are you dumb a$$es to claim what is “cheating” or not? Are you a member of a body that regulates the sport? If so then charge Qatar with cheating and state the charge, if not, then stfu.

This is sure not the first nor last round of cheating in sports. Heck, just remember how Germans got to the finals 🙂

But that’s certainly a world’s first where literally *everything* was paid for: a) rights for tournament b) national team c) “fans” d) referees, all at the same time and without even pretending otherwise… Dear Qataris, you are world champions indeed. Just not in handball.

I guess lot many people here cant digest the fact that Qatar has reached the finals. They expected Qatar to lose much earlier and unfortunately things haven’t gone their way. You can criticise Qatar as much as you want but when they win give them credit rather than acting as sore losers.

So Qatar must be my team too 🙂
But that team sucks!
Anyway I’m happy for the Balkan people living there that can make an excellent money coaching -not so worldwide popular sports-, as players, as physiotherapists or inexperienced and/or (below) average doctors.
I’m sure Qatar will get tired of this old toy (handball) and would move to something else.

Referees made at least 5 big mistakes in favour of Quatar. None in favour of Poland. Very often one mistake counts for 2 goals (goal not scored plus goal lost). The game was fixed in the same way as Quatar’s games against Austria and Germany. Scandal!!! Nothing to do with sport! People that do not see this lack honour…

I was there for all of Qatar’s matches and yes, they were subtly helped by the referees at some point of time. But that is understandable for any host nation.

About naturalisation, yes, the Qatar team is made up mostly of ‘imported’ players. But this has been going on for ever at other European nations as well. Talant Dujshebaev of Russia, and then Spain, is a good example. Qatar has been doing it on a larger scale, that’s the only difference. Saying “it’s ok we’re doing it because it’s just one or two players” is plain hypocrisy.

Qatar haven’t broken any rules. They are within IHF regulations. Unless the world body doesn’t change rules, one cannot complain if a country with the means to do so naturalise players. Handball is an almost exclusively European sport. That Qatar is the FIRST non-European side to feature in the final since the competition started in 1938 speaks volumes about the sport’s niche market.

I think it’s just knee-jerk reaction about a non-European team’s success that’s got everyone angry. Handball is a dying sport everywhere other than Europe. One should really be thankful that there’s a country ready to invest so much money into the sport’s promotion. Who knows, the Qataris may just have saved the sport from extinction.

So dear European nay-sayers, it’s good for a non-European country to win once in a while too. Get over it.

Why do most citizens of Communazi countries have such debilitating inferiority complexes that they need to reflect it as nationalism? There was zero bribing of the referees or the bidding rights. Qatar is not anywhere near as corrupt as the radical right neo-Nazi regime in Poland.

Well done Qatar, proud of the team. Most national teams are made up of people born elsewhere, it’ immaterial. It used to be the case, certainly in football, that players came from the town or city they played for. We live in a global village these days, and sportsmen and women are free to play where they choose. Astute team management, forget the detractors,

Yacine

I can see there is a lot of hatred going on in the comments thread. We all agree that naturalizing players for few months just to play the World Cup is nonsense, but Qatar is not the only country that did it. The only thing is that Qatar is doing it on a massive scale, as nearly 75% of the team is non-Qatari, whereas other teams might naturalize one, two or three players maximum. Anyway congratulations Qatar and let’s hope they win the WC. Sorry France, I am supporting Qatar 🙂
