With reporting from Nada Badawi

To save street space and keep Qatar smelling clean, authorities are installing underground garbage containers on the Corniche.

The move is part of a pilot project that may be rolled out to other streets, as well as in malls, hotels and other buildings, the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) said.

In a statement, it continued:

“The project works using the hydraulic lifting system for containers, where the containers’ platform opens and closes safely, and in a record time that does not exceed 20 seconds.”

The MME added that the system solves the problem of stray animals digging into garbage cans on the Corniche.

Finally, it cuts down the workload of the General Cleanliness department, which now only needs to dispose of the waste once a day in the evening.

Have you seen the new containers? Thoughts?
